I'm apparently the only one who remembers the paper that came out in 2009 about how they proved they could influence elections on Facebook by taking out ads for specific users to change their voting habits. They tracked a few thousand people, managed to change them to Obama (from Hillary and McCain) and the libertarian candidate (forget which one) from McCain. They actually gave the number of votes they specifically were able to change in key swing states and it formed the foundation for the modern use of social media for politics.
