This video implies that the F-5 was conceived by the USAF as an alternative to its existing more sophisticated fighters. That's not really the case, and USAF never planned to acquire the F-5 for its own use. The F-5 was designed as a low-cost fighter for allied air forces, not for USAF service. It was a spectacular success in that role, but it was never seriously considered for mainline service by USAF. Also, the F-5 was not developed from the T-38, it was developed from the Northrop N-165.
