@Terminxman - The book it's based on is. It's based on the book "Oil!" by Upton Sinclair (the author who wrote "The Jungle"). The movie does de-emphasize the attack on the oil industry some but it's still there, but more subdued. The future oil baron "protagonist" of the movie played by Daniel Day Lewis is portrayed as an antisocial sociopath who mercilessly conquers business enemies (and personal enemies) so he can make enough money to move away from society.
