@interstate317 - I know what you were comparing but it was bullshit so I felt compelled to dispel it. The top 5% earns around 1/4 of the entire national income. The top 10% earns almost 70% of the entire national income. The tax you're talking is about is only the federal INCOME tax. There are several federal taxes including the federal payroll tax. For all federal taxes combined those who earned between $34,300 and $141,900/year paid 50.5% of all federal tax revenues in 2007.

@Cap1108 - Yeah. I have to admit that most of the top 20% are just hard-working middle class citizens who largely live paycheck-to-paycheck like the rest of the bottom 80%. Their paycheck is just a little bigger. It's the top 2-5% who are the ones in power influencing policy to keep giving themselves tax breaks and bailouts while passing the buck on to everyone else.

@Grindermetalhead - Truth. As a libertarian socialist I agree. Capitalism is a damn sight better than Feudalism and IMO Western capitalism of the 1930s to 1970s was a damn sight better than 19th and early 20th century capitalism. But there can still be system(s) that are a damn sight better than capitalism. We shouldn't rest on our laurels and pretend it's the "end of history" as Francis Fukuyama claimed it was.

@interstate317 - "Our top 1% pays way more in taxes" The middle class pays the majority of federal taxes combined. The top 10% only pay the most in the federal income tax which isn't surprising given they earn over 40% of wealth in the country. The top 10%, especially the top 2%, have a shitload of tax credits and tax breaks they can apply for as well as a bunch of tax loopholes. Most small business owners aren't in the top 5% income bracket.
