I do not think that would work so easily in China. For many decades, the Chinese have known nothing but an authoritarian form of government. Any self-confidence and desire to participate in shaping the country has been eradicated from the Chinese for many decades. It would take incredibly long time to reverse the effects in the population of this. You only have to look at Russia. After the collapse of the Eastern Bloc, the Russians had the same opportunities to become a free society as everyone else who had previously been part of this alliance. And what ultimately happened in Russia? The Russian people have allowed themselves to slowly but surely relapse into a dictatorship over a period of 20 years. Estonia, Lithuania, East Germany, Poland...the people in these countries have all managed to develop themselves from a previous dictatorship to a democratic form of government. But not the Russians...things are now back to how they were in Stalin's time. Of course I can't predict it, but I think that would be the case in China as well.
