  1. "Is it government's place to subsidize industries?" Short answer is yes, it is their job to create opportunities and growth within society with our tax dollars especially if it generates more than it costs. Taxes paid have always supported specific business's related to infrastructure and created jobs. I am not sure why you imagine this is any different than any number of other things done in the past.
