Here in Australia TV call-signs for commercial stations are: two letters to denote the licensee with the third letter denoting the state, N = New South Wales(NSW); V = Victoria; Q = Queensland; S = South Australia; W = West Australia; T = Tasmania. The Northern Territory is NOT a state, the third letter in the TV call sign there is D = Darwin(the chief town in the territory), the state identifier should be S = South Australia. The Australian Capital Territory is also NOT a state, it is cocooned within the state of NSW but TV call-sign identifier letter there is C = Capital, it should be N = NSW. The ABC TV network(national non-commercial) call-signs are AB followed by state alpha identifier in state capitals, and in regional and rural areas, one, two or even three letters between the AB and state alpha identifier. When SBS(Special Broadcasting Service) started their TV network in 1980, the broadcasting authority of the day never applied the call-sign template to them. Strange, that! With radio a state numerical identifier precedes two call-letters for AM stations and three call-letters followed by -FM for....you guessed it! They are: 2 = NSW and ACT; 3 = Victoria; 4 = Queensland; 5 = South Australia(should also apply to Northern Territory); 6 = West Australia; 7 = Tasmania; 8(but should be 5) = Northern Territory.
