Comments by "Neil Forbes" (@neilforbes416) on "Davy Jones Dead: Fellow Monkees' Bandmember Micky Dolenz Remembers Jones in 'GMA' Interview" video.
The quartet became a trio when Peter Tork left in late 1968. The remaining trio of Mickey Dolenz(originally called Mickey Braddock in his "Circus Boy" days), Davey Jones and Mike Nesmith stuck it out for another year before going their separate ways in late 1969. Nesmith formed a "phantom" group called The First National Band, which was just himself playing all the instruments on his two big hits of 1970, "Joanne" and "Silver Moon" and their respective B-sides, "One Rose" and "Lady Of The Valley" plus other cuts off his "Taproot Manuscript" album. Dolenz and Jones teamed up with Tommy Boyce and Bobby Hart, using their surnames as the name of their group. This happened about mid-1970s, then the reforming of The Monkees with Dolenz, Jones and Tork but Nesmith wasn't interested as he had his own projects to work on at the time. That's it in a nutshell.

@PlumbPitiful Taproot Manuscript is credited on the 45rpm issue of "Silver Moon"/"Lady Of The Valley" issued in 1970. The songs on the single are lifted from that LP.
