  4. Not entirely. The Imperial(British) mile is slightly longer than the US mile. The US and Imperial measurements only mutually comply in the smaller measurements up to a given level. A US gallon of petrol is less(by somewhere between 3 and 10 fluent ounces) than an Imperial(British) gallon.

Self-driving cars will rely heavily on electronic guidance and other sophisticated engineering, Should anything at all go wrong with these systems(if it can, it will), the passenger inside will be placed in a very lethal predicament. Add to this the comments made by Jack Skellington an hour earlier than my post, and you have a recipe for disaster.

  6. Thing is, though, the pilot is always on hand at the controls should a fault develop in the auto-pilot system on passenger aircraft. In a self-driving car, you are but a passenger with no input into the control of the vehicle.

  7. For imperial measurements, it was MPH = Miles Per Hour. Australia adopted metric distance measurement(Kilometre) and thus vehicle speed measurement(Km/H) along with the rest of the metric system from about 1973/74.

  12. For purposes of ready reckoning and quicker calculation, the mile or kilometre per hour is the easiest way to calculate speed by using larger, more manageable units. Calculating in SI just adds an unnecessary layer of complexity.

  13. +M Jones, yes, fairly mirrors what I said earlier. Clearly the idea of driverless cars HAD NOT been thought through properly. We've reached the point in our technological history now where new "gadgets" are being invented for their own sakes with little or no consideration as to whether or not they're useful or even needed(mainly they're NOT needed). Much of our technical advancement has been through the previous(20th) century when developments in technology were borne out of the need for improvements. By the end of the century what improvements that were needed, had been accomplished, leaving not much room, or need for any further development.

  18. Ah the youthful joys of the kids piling into the back seat of Dad's FJ Holden(or earlier 48-215 model) and going out for a Sunday drive to nowhere in particular. Maybe the car was fitted with a radio, "Air Chief" made a range of models to suit the Holden cars, Dad would turn it on and wait for it to warm up(vacuum tubes, not transistors, drain the guts out of a car's battery unless it was kept running), tune it to a local station playing.....(insert music genre here).... cruising around for a few hours before turning around and heading for home again. Now, try to imagine this scene in 2037. Someone who's had the sense to buy an older car that the driver controls, is riding along the road, and either side of that road lies the wreckage of driverless cars that have met with nasty accidents because of system failures.... Hold your nose though, because the stench of rotting corpses trapped in those vehicles will make you puke!

As a service, I will rewrite what you've said with correct spelling, plus other corrections as needed: "I want to keep my hand on the wheel. I have never had a problem in 3-and-a-half years of driving".

  21. Skyprince27: Do you know what Cruise Control is? I have it in my 2003-vintage Ford Falcon "Futura" station Wagon. It is the facility that allows you to ride at a constant fixed speed over extended distances without the need to keep the foot on the accelerator pedal. To activate, I press a button on the rear-side of the steering wheel's Cruise Control Adjustment buttons, then I get my car up to the wanted speed, then I press either 'Set+' or 'Set-' to engage Cruise Control, now I can ride along at a constant 100 Km/H through the area called The Sandhills" which I pass through on my way from Port Stephens to Newcastle, which is a 100 Kilometre-per-hour zone. When I get to the end, I just press again the button I first pressed to deactivate Cruise Control. My car has automatic gears, by the way.

  23. +Skyprince27, you don't quite understand the purpose behind Cruise Control. You would NEVER use CC(abbreviation for purpose of this post) in a city, where you're stopping and starting due to the traffic lights. CC is for the open road, where you can get your car up to a given speed, engage CC and hum along at a constant set speed(say, 100 Kilometres per hour[Km/H]). "Hum along"? Probably only because I for got the words LOL. Seriously though, CC is for use on multi-lane freeways(or highways or expressways, however they might be called). CC is not for inner-city stop-start driving. As for the term "Self-Driving", more correctly it should be "self-steering" because it's the engine that actually "drives"(propels) the car, the so-called "driver" merely sits behind the steering wheel and guides the vehicle and operates the gears in cars with "Spanish" gears(Manuel = manual, get it? LOL). It's that last vestige of control that we should not/must not relinquish to automation.

  24. Having the ACCELERATOR and brake together in one lever was very rudimentary, but this was the first commercially available "horseless carriage" after all. Foot-pedals for clutch, brake and ACCELERATOR would come later.
