The TRULY talented singers and songwriters are now in retirement.... or dead. They come from the 1950s, 1960s and 1970s. Interestingly enough the rise in music quality, particularly Rock & Roll, started alongside the advent of the vinyl 45rpm record, or just a few years thereafter. Music of the 1900s to the 1940s was stoltifyingly boring and well deserving of the meagre shellac-based technology of the day. As the 1960s madeway for the 1960s and a technology first developed in the late 1930s finally found a use, stereo, music steadily improved and evolved into Adult-Oriented-Rock, along with the other popular genres. But as we moved into the 1980s and the compact disc era of digital reporoduction, music quality was beginning to go backwards as those artists and groups began to leave the industry through retirement and/or death, only to be replaced be less-talented, or non-talented wannabes into the 1990s and through to today's pathetic specimens. The greats, like Stevie Wonder, Neil Diamond, Gordon Lightfoot and their generation live on only through the legacy of their vintage recordings in original or reissued compilations.
