There's still a sizeable population in their 60s to their 90s who truly experienced a vice like terror grip under the Catholic Church, who are protesting. The Church in Ireland was its own authority, very much overreaching many institutions, services and the communities it served). The "banana republic" came to be when the Church was invited into written constitution, to enmesh itself in the society of a fragile, newly formed Independent Irish state. A relationship between the two bodies and way of life for everyone that was cemented in 1937 by DeValera. The Church will simply wait it out for any survivors to die in time, when the latest incidents become half a century old and accusations forming as second hand information form close friends and relatives of those late victims. Not to say that we shouldn't welcome Pope Francis. Not to say we should make a balls out of it with a hard smack down and ruin the celebration that could be had. Like everything else, it's all too complicated to be said with one narrative.
