@Toastrackman The Romans were certainly very advanced for their time, but I suspect their reliance on slaves most likely contributed to their lack of further advance and finally their downfall. You simply don't need to invent a machine to do something if you have slaves to do it for very little cost. I suspect this may have also been the reason some other "civilisations"(?) did / have not progressed as far as they might have.
