  1. no, don't blame reagan. blame james madison. he wrote a constitution whose purpose was to allow the rich to rule. principle was simple: concentrate all power in a political aristocracy, and buy, rent or be in that group. the rich do that. this power is not absolute, and hartmann's father was in the generation where the grip of the rich was relaxed, by a combination of the great depression and ww2. but the constitution still prevailed, and the rich slowly bought back their dominance. democracy is the cure. in a democracy the poor and middles can use their numbers to combat the power of the rich to buy, by circumventing the politicians with citizen initiative. further, requiring assent to referendum and demanding open government obviates secret deals where money talks. it's simple really: get democracy, and be a member of the ruling class, the people.
