  1. well, any discussion involving 'american democracy' is not going anywhere, anymore than predicting tinkerbell will lead usans to disneyland. what sometimes happens, is that a dispossessed middle class overturns the national myth, very gently, and the pent-up rage of the sans culottes breaks everything. something new is born, always better, but not necessarily lasting. the french have had several revolutions, and never came close to democracy or any realization of egalite', poor russia even worse. i'm hoping usa splits apart, peacefully, as ussr did. china, now, is a little hopeful: their revolution has lifted china to a unique degree, and they are making substantial efforts to spread the money. the new [ marxist ] mandarinate is very suited to their history and culture, so they are likely to function well for 100 years or more. failure is built in to every human society, and prc have no magic answer to the corrosion of privilege and corruption. i think that needs democracy, which homo sapiens is smart enough to devise, not smart enough to attain. missed it by that much! no matter- climate catastrophe looks like leveling us to the ground, or the grave. so dance while you can, make sure your kids do mandarin in school.
