what, not who, is a good question. answer is difficult for americans, because the only formal input to government that they have, is 'who?'
in a democracy, the citizens determine 'what.' but in an elective oligarchy, 'who' is the only question, and the choice is very limited. connecting the who with the result is next to impossible, since many candidates have no intention of carrying out promises, and many others find that holding their office depends taking bribes and betraying supporters.
why do americans put up with a corrupt and ineffectual management system? because they have abandoned hope and lost all connection with their masters. usa began with a constitution that was sold to state grandees as likely to ensure the rule of rich over the many. it worked so well that it continues to imprison the minds of americans, they never dream of revolution.
bernie makes trump nervous, because he has beaten the usual corrupt democratic candidate, and bernie is different. it's quite possible bernie might beat trump. but that is not the primary question facing america. bernie in office doesn't change the political culture of america. it will remain an elective oligarchy until someone writes a new constitution.
