i don't mind usa falling, but i will be grumpy if they take the rest of the planet with them.

more of a protracted slump, with boils, bleeding sores, rising laughter from afar. when the rot is deep enough, collapse.

the fall of the usa is a much-desired event, presuming fossil fuel use declined rapidly as well. no such luck.

phd candidates spend a year or more documenting the structural flaws behind the collapse of american society, some of them make a few dollars publishing their thesis as a popular book. of these, some say the reagan presidency was the beginning of the end. my view is the day the usa constitution was established marked the beginning of the end, simply because it codified a society unresponsive to the needs of the great majority of its people. rome didn't fall, it slumped, remaining a potent force over much of its several hundred years of decline. the usa is likely to follow that pattern, a gradual decay as asia re-assumes its leading place in human society. visit china, if you can: it will begin to install some modesty into american arrogance.

it didn't fall in 476 ce. that was merely the hard landing of the tag-end. it started falling in many places and different times, and usa will be very lucky to last as long as 'the fall' of the roman empire. but it's a good template to hold against the usa, as there are some common features. the important one is the 'hollowing out' of the middle class with war and slavery in rome, militarism and out-sourcing in the usa. that is the path to dictatorship.
