some states in the usa have a 'democracy' constitution, and would be a respectable democracy if independent. california would be a successful nation from birth. can't think why they don't leave the federation. most usa states have little or none of the features of a democracy - simply look for the presence of effective and accessible citizen initiative, without which, a society is not a democracy. in nondemocratic societies, corruption is endemic, and difficult to discover, because contending parties have a common interest in not informing the civilians as to the nature of their subjection. and of course, a great many tolerate corruption above and exploitation below because they are more comfortable 'going along' than they would be in resistance. indeed, many in the usa make a living in the usa expressing shock! horror! at the 'doings' of the elite, while never suggesting revolution.

@brianniegemann4788 i judge the civil war to be a conclusive test, although no law involved, just plain old 'me strong, you weak.' but if the west coast and northeast decided to leave, in concert, there would be no war. simply because it is the strong deciding to kick free from the backward.
