@WALTERBROADDUS I was thinking of the entire Pearl Harbor attack, mostly symbolized by that pic of the Arizona burning, but you are right about the Maine. Hearst made it all about Spain in his newspapers, when no-one really knew at the time. The one that amuses me is when people say the US got in to WWI because of the Lusitania, when the US didn't declare war until nearly two years later.

@scottygdaman lets say the US was "western hemisphere centric" rather than isolationist. The "Roosevelt Corollary" was the excuse for a decades long series of military interventions in Latin America to make the region "safe for purchase". iirc, those interventions ended in the 1930s, about the same time the Philippines were set on a path to independence.

@paulpeterson4216 across Lake Michigan, in Muskegon, is the USS Silversides, one of several Gato class subs preserved. Muskegon is also the home of a preserved WWII LST. Going through the Silversides, I noticed it's interior is exactly like the set used in "Operation Pacific", and the Silversides is mentioned in that film.
