@dandarling152 it seems, no. Hornet succeeded in losing a large portion of it's air group for nothing. In the case of all three carriers, only the torpedo squadrons flew on the right course to intercept the Japanese. Hornet's dive bombers and fighters flew too far to the north, and several ended up ditching when they ran out of gas. Enterprise and Yorktown's bombers and fighters flew too far to the south. Can't help but wonder what the result would have been if the bombers and fighters from all three carriers had followed their torpedo bombers and launched a coordinated attack, as they had at Coral Sea.

@GaldirEonai I read the Barker book about RAF torpedo bombers a couple months ago. The issues with the torpedo bomber were compounded by the pilot's need to eyeball target speed and range, because the torp is so slow. All that made the probability of a hit slim. By late in WWII, the RAF torpedo bombers were pretty much replaced by aircraft firing rockets. Rockets were not only a lot faster, thus minimizing the impact of pilot errors in range and speed estimates, they were a lot cheaper. Of course, a heavy rocket would hit a battleship in the armor belt or in the superstructure, so would be less likely to be fatal than a torpedo hit, so the RAF move to rockets could be due to the Germans no longer having heavily armored ships to shoot at.
