@janwitts2688 yes, most people are obsessed with size. RN torpedo boat defense went from 12 pounders, to 4". then 6" on the Iron Dukes. But Jackie Fisher held forth on the 4", saying that rate of fire more than made up for the smaller individual shells. The ships that Fisher had a direct hand in designing, the Renowns and Courageouses, had multiple 4", rather than casemate mounted 6". On the USN example I worked out, the only advantage the 5"/51 had was in armor penetration, but the DDs and torpedo boats the secondaries were intended to shoot at typically are not armored, so does the 5" armor penetration really make a difference?

A while back, I took a look at the USN using the twin low angle 4"/50 that was experimented with in 1918 as a battleship secondary, rather than the single 5"/51. Interesting: greater rate of fire, greater throw weight, for the same installed weight. Then I created a hypothetical DP twin 4" cutting the 4"/50 down to 45 caliber, using the mount from the British DP 4"/45. Weighed less than the combination of a 5"/51 and 5"/25 that the USN used, with a higher rate of fire in both anti-surface and AA roles that the mix of 5", and the 01 deck was left open for installation of light AA.

@WALTERBROADDUS double entendre intended. A lot of my male coworkers drove huge SUVs and pickups, which I defined as compensation for some inadequacy anxiety.
