@kemarisite Seems that the Italians were asking the same question as Joe: what's the point of a heavy cruiser? With treaty tonnage limits, heavies were not well protected, so could be chopped up by a CL, or a DD, but a CA's 8" isn't going to make much more of an impression on a BB's 12" thick armor than a CL's 6". Italy started out building heavies in the late 20s and early 30s, but then built nothing but CLs in later years.

@kemarisite The postwar preference for the Baltimores could be, as Drach said in his piece on interwar Brit cruiser development, because a heavy cruiser is the most impressive looking thing you can show the flag with, if you can't use a battleship. Or, it could be that a lot of Clevelands saw a good portion of the war and were worn out, while the Baltimores saw less war and were in better condition.

What was the first class of CL to have multiple gun turrets, like the Leanders? A quick look around gave me the Omahas as the first with a dual gun turret main armament. I saw several WWI CLs with a pair of single 6" mounts side by side forward, which seems particularly awkward. BBs and armored cruisers had dual gun turrets for decades before WWI.
