If someone wonders the handgun ammo expended by the SMS Scharfschütze, it must be noted, that the channel leading into the inner harbor of Ravenna (where Porto Corsini is) was at the time 30 meters "wide" - while the Huszár class destroyer was 67 meters long. This explains the "stern first" approach as well as the need for shooting sidearms the way out at charging Italian infantry. No lack of spirit on either side.

  13. FYI the K.u.K. Kriegsmarine SUCCESSFULLY denied control of the Adriatic for the Allies until there was no Austro-Hungarian coastline to defend (ie the dual Monarchy disintegrated from under their proverbial feet), so yes.

  15. The Imp German SMS Emden had only 10cm guns too, so it is not that surprising. Besides the Soka 10cm/L50 guns were rather powerfull for a 4"-ish gun and had high angle mounting. Not enough for anti-airship work, but with a range that even Royal Navy cruisers later in the war thought that the guns were actually 12cm (4,7") or 15cm (5,9") ones.   23.  @super44lover  The listed range with the usual max British turret elevation of 14 degrees, thus range was around 14 kilometers (the number 14 is just a coincidence), at that range early 1910's fire control might hit a tipical dreadnought size target. Thus an armored cruiser with 9.2" main guns posed a limited threat within that range to any ship. With a lucky hit, she could have crippled even a dreadnought. Just keep in mind that a German bc or dread can also cripple or outright kill that same ship with a few four-gun salvoes, without luck playing much role in it.

The Austro-Hungarian dual monarchy was spanning a great deal along the coast of the Adriatic sea, including current areas of Slovenia, Croatia, Bodnis snd parts of Montenegro (like the mentioned port of Cattaro, today's Kotor), making a great deal of shoreline trade. Mines, shore arty and torpedocraft can only defend all this partly. There was the need for trade with Africa, South- and North Amerika even China then some policing in the Mediterraen and a certain amount of the usualy "we are the local bully", excercised to this day in this theatre, by Turkey, Italy and France as local players, With Egypt and Israel joinging.

  42. They were fire on charging Italian infantry in the mentioned narrow channel, from the SMS Scharfschütze. Cpt Novontny was Polish and after the collapse of the A-H dual monarchy he was the first "sea lord" of the reborn Poland. I think it explains a lot how about the Free Polish Navy in WWII.

They tried, but they too often run into a torpedo, see: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=opKPIrelD9o It might have to do something with the total air dominance of the Austro-Hungarian naval aviation in the first or so year of the war - since Italy had like 6 airships and 3 (three) working navy airplanes, while the KuK Kriegsmarine had 36 actually working aircraft, mostly Lohner flying boats.

  44. Sounds funny, but it really looks like from available sources, that the K.u.K. Kriegsmarine actually mapped and planned this strike for years, designating targets in advance "just in case" and each ship, which sailed out, had her exact and specific target list.

  46.  @super44lover  The 9.2" shells weighted about 50% more than the 8" shells (cca 170 vs cca 110 kgs) . At Jutland a massive number of torpedoboats, destroyers and light cruisers swarmed around both fleets, thus they gave plenty of targets to the older armored cruisers. Besides, they were perfectly capable to hurt battlecruisers or even battleships if they got in range. Maybe not sinking/exploding them outright, but cripple them, kill their secondaries, set them afire, punch holes in parts not armored or in the weaker parts of the distributed armor...

  47. His name was Bagumil (or Bogumil) Nowotny, a Polish nationality officer. He later became the first admiral of the re-formed Poland after WWI. As I said, it explains a lot about the Free Polish Navy in WWII.
