  1. Actually, the reason for such muted colors in The Little Mermaid remake is not because of the constraints of live-action. After all, the movie has the excuse of mermaids seeing the world differently from humans in order to justify a surprisingly vivid color scheme for underneath the ocean surface. The muted colors are because of incompetence, stubbornness, a requisite from Disney, or a combination of the three. Look at Pinocchio. Nighttime scenes aside, especially the ride to Pleasure Island, the color scheme is vivid.
