@bkjeong4302 Not as I know. Star shells are fired to a range that, even if they “miss,” they are very unlikely to put more light on friendly ships than on enemy.

@unryumaru2095 Yes, hence vessels having many fewer searchlights after late 1943 than before then. Similarly, many navies reduced aircraft carried, or removed aircraft launch equipment altogether, as their search &!spot function was superseded by radar.

@Captain_Seafort By 1880s, tests had shown that single thickness armour was more effective than multiple layers adding to the same thickness. However it is hard to produce large single-plate armour of the total thickness.

@konstantinmostakov6914 Naval constructors refused to accept that CTs would be used hardly-if-ever. Many battleships had their original massive CT replaced during modernization with a thinner, lighter one.
