@brendonbewersdorf986 These were either “some boilers used oil fed by automatic systems and some used coal shoveled by hand,” or “all used coal that had been sprayed with oil.”

Which ship is this?

@bertbaker7067 Putting enough water into one’s hull to submerge the hull (assuming the sea was deep enough) would likely cause it to capsize.

@stevevalley7835 Likely, very. A full-tilt, “to the max and a shade more if you can hide it” rebuild would have yielded a delta similar to what the QE and Renown got: -higher main gun elevation -completely new machinery (which would likely be much lighter than original, freeing displacement for other needs), perhaps trunking all uptakes to one funnel, reducing mass and opening deck space -improved secondary guns and mounts -improved fire control -additional or replacement armor over vitals -rebuild of the quarterdeck to make it less wet -perhaps improvement to the bow and forecastle to ship less green water and flatten or reshape the bow wave at flank bell … It would have been a stupendously capable ship.

@King-mitch Likely scrapped, as similarly famous ships, including one named for a monarch, were.

@sadwingsraging3044 Almost certainly a Christmas decoration. Given the advanced state of construction evident in the photo, this was likely holidays of 1917-18.

28:40 And none of these improvements would really make any difference to her ability to stand in the line of battle. 8” main belt? Hell, even heavy cruisers could’ve threatened her below 12,5 km.

20:10 Did nobody really involved in the RN look at how the intel dept were describing upcoming German battlecruisers and say “naaah, that ain’t possible.”
