  4.  Big Dick Black  Being cheap does not automatically mean that you have more poverty. While these cheaper states are often correlated with higher rates of poverty, it does not always result this way. Remember, correlation does not equal causation.

  5.  Big Dick Black  In my opinion, California didn't fail due to diversification. It failed due to mismanagement and politicians more satisfied in going about a political agenda rather than serving the needs of the people. Diversification will bring changes to a state (both socially and economically) but it doesn't have to be "bad". If the government manages to keep steady (take a state such as Utah), it won't have to end in failure. Even states such as Colorado are diversifying while still attracting people and businesses.

You mean to tell me the place with a higher outbound migration than inward, high cost of living, high (and expanding) taxes, poor business environment (which has driven notable companies to leave) is somehow “better by far”? I mean, to each their own, but I’m not aligning with that.

  7.  Big Dick Black  Not all of the South is a “misfortune”. If it were so, people would not be moving there in droves and there would not be a sizable economic output from these states. Furthermore, if the South is America’s misfortune, what exactly is the better place?

  8.  Big Dick Black  I think Louisiana might be poorer than Mississippi, but I see your point. I just wish Mississippi's government would do more to diversify it's economy. Even Alabama is trying to get involved with the space industry in Huntsville.

  9.  @Scollywood67  I won't deny that red states are often less developed than blue states. However, every state has it's own unique scenario. Instead of saying, "Only one of them is a blue state🤣 Red states are so behind", perhaps you should look into why that one blue state is on the list. Maybe you may find something.

  16.  Big Dick Black  Well, as a person who was born and raised in the South, I do believe that you’d be hard-pressed to find a person deny Virginia being a Southern state. As for Maryland, it seems it just got grouped in with the South for Census purposes.

You're right that California homes are probably high-priced because of desirability. I mean who doesn't want to live in a home, when your other choice is being a renter in a packed city? Furthermore, with the ongoing housing shortage in the state, I suppose I can see why the average price of a home in San Francisco is over one million dollars compared to around $307,000 in Charlotte, NC (keep in mind, both cities have similar populations). 3. California has one of the highest tax burdens in the nation. Tax Foundation rated California as having the eighth highest tax burden amongst states (as of 2019). 4. CNBC complied a list of the top states for doing business in 2019. California landed in 32nd place on that list. That was actually a drop from 27th place when the list was complied in 2015. Additionally, Tax Foundation stated in their "2021 State Business Tax Climate Index", that California was next to dead last in terms business tax burdens (only topped by New Jersey). Although I certainly don't mean to sway any opinion from this. I'm simply providing you with my sources, as you've provided me with yours.

  18.  @jondstewart  Georgia is one of the fastest growing states in the Union. Tennessee has a high growth rate as well. While I personally don't understand the big deal about those states, I cannot deny that some of these states have (and are) experienced a great deal of increased action despite supposedly nobody caring about them.

  19.  @lrn_news9171  From the federal poverty rate, California does not have the highest poverty level. However, when using the Supplemental Poverty Measure (seen to be a more accurate representation of poverty in America), California does indeed have the highest rate in the nation. I’m not sure if it’s 20%, though.

  25.  Big Dick Black  I would say not really. It's definitely distinct amongst Southern states, but if we graded things by such distinctions, we wouldn't even be a nation (as the states have many differences). Additionally, not all Southern states even have the death penalty.

Latest Census estimates (from this year) show that Cali has not only lost people for the second year in a row, but that outward migration from California is higher than migration to California. So Cali and WV are both losing people 😐 And if you can afford all that stuff in Cali (which has the highest poverty rate in the U.S), then I suppose you will do well-enough.

  34.  @cinder2085  Well, until recently many of the Deep South states were ran by Democrats. Didn't shift until the 2000s-2010s. Not saying that it was because of Democrats, but just pointing it out. But yes the Deep South does have huge problems with poverty and education. No disputing that.
