This is what happens when you get your history from foreigners. Fact is prior to 1200 CE, entire NE used to be populated by Bengalis. Which is why the most ancient culture, customs and languages of NE are similar to Bengali. 1200 CE, Tai Chinese Ahoms invaded and occupied these Bengali kingdoms. From 1400 CE, NE faced invasions from Burma and eventually went under Burmese occupation till 1832 CE. 1832 CE East India Company freed NE from Burma but with majority Chinese and Burmese origin people many of whom till this day don't accept themselves as Indians although many adopted the local culture and customs. This is the crux of the never ending insurgencies, ethnic and racial conflicts in NE. The Bodos, Khasis, Chutiyas are mongoloid or Austroasiatic people who settled in NE only during the Chinese and Burmese occupation of NE. The original inhabitants were Dravidian and Australoid aborigines. Later on came the Indo Aryan settlers who spread Sanskritized culture in this region before they too were replaced by various people and tribes from China and Burma. This is the reason why NE is so different from rest of India even in those parts where people are Hindus. Therefore, stop reading history written by foreigners and do your own research by visiting the place.

@basedperson1409 Yo, you forgot to mention tantric form of Buddhism went from Bengal to Tibet and China which is evident in the artwork in the Buddhist monasteries in Tibet and China. Today's China is Han Chinese version of USSR. Today's China includes East Turkestan, Inner Mongolia, Tibet, Manchuria which are very different from Han China in the South East Coast of China. More than 4/5 of China is not Han China.

@anupamboruah2991 Mongoloid people are Sinic and not Indic. Most ancient historical, archeological, cultural artifacts are all Indic and not Sinic. Assamese language, culture, customs are same as those of Bengalis. The most ancient aboriginal non Mongoloid people of NE and Bengali people are one and the same. Differences cropped up after NE was invaded and occupied by Chinese and then Burmese before NE was separated from Burma and returned to Bengal/India but with significant Chinese and Burmese origin people who till this day have never accepted themselves as Indians and have been taking help from both China and Burma to separate NE from India. The other part which went under Afghan and Turkic occupation became Bengal. There was no Bengal prior to Turkic and Mughal occupation of the eastern most part of the Indian subcontinent. These are well documented historical facts and not figments of my imagination my good sir. If I am wrong, then ask yourself why Paresh Barua, someone who shares your surname floated ULFA with the help of China and fighting against India to this day?? Axom is named after the Tai Chinese Ahoms/Oxoms from Yunnan. The language, culture, customs of Oxoms is not Assamese but Tai Chinese. This is fact.
