In a democracy, leaders have to be elected not nominated. Nomination means wrong people in leadership positions which will lead to demise of the party. This is also true in companies where wrong people fill up leadership positions leading to bad decisions and ultimately demise of the company.

@DKS Modi managed to defeat a titan like Advani when BJP was in a strong position to be the PM candidate. Shashi Tharoor miserably failed to defeat a reluctant Kharge who was forced to compete by the Nehru Gandhis at a time when Congress is at its weakest. This shows Tharoor may speak well but he is no match for someone like Modi when he can't defeat even a Kharge when entire nation and majority of Congress party members were openly or secretly supporting Tharoor.
