Not only Nellie massacre but insurgencies in North East is largely due to government hiding the history of north east. North East was under 600 years of Chinese and Burmese occupation before it was liberated from Burma by East India Company in 1832 and returned to India but with majority population consisting of people of Chinese or Burmese origin who have never accepted themselves as Indians. Today's Assam was a Bengali kingdom called Kamrupa which was invaded by Chinese Ahoms from Yunnan in circa 1200 AD. After the Chinese invasion and occupation, the Burmese invaded and occupied north east from circa 1400 AD to 1832AD. 1832 East India Company liberated North East from Burma and returned to India but with majority Chinese or Burmese origin people who never got along with Indians. This is why they have been taking help from China and Burma right from 1950s to separate from India. This is the reason why north east is not seeing any peace even after 75 years of India's independence.

@Kartik Chauhan Assamese language is nothing but Bengali. But, Tai people like Ahoms and Meitei have their own language which is different from any Indian language. Many of the people from China and Burma adopted local Indic culture particularly Bengali, while many retained their original culture, language and customs similar to those of Burma or southern China.

@GN Deka Assam got its name from Ahoms who are Dai Chinese and not Indians. Kamrupa was a Bengali kingdom which is why all culture, customs, and language of Assam is similar to Bengali and not Chinese or Burmese. The Nagas, Kukis, Mizos etc are all from Burma as they are found in Burma as well. All the rulers of north east prior to Su Ka Pha were Bengalis.

@Bruh! you have unwittingly proved what I have mentioned. The word Assam is anglicized Oxom which is not an Indian word as it is named after Ahoms who are Dai Chinese and not Indians. The language, culture, customs of Assam are similar to Bengali. Whereas the large Austroasiatic and Mongoloid population have blood ties with people of Burma and southern China. Maithli, Bengali, Assamese and Odiya have many things in common.

@Bruh! India got Assam from Burma in 1832 which is how north east has large number of tribes who are found in Burma as well. Ahoms are not Indians but Dai Chinese. If they assimilated they wouldn't be sitting in China and trying to separate north east from India. They hate people from "mainland India" and refuse to integrate with India and Indians while squatting in India for last several centuries.
