What Amritpal has been saying in a crude, rude and blunt manner also has been said in a more polished manner by TN finance minister, Palanivel Thiagarajan and Shashi Tharoor of greater autonomy to the states. India was not supposed to be governed centrally but as a federation of autonomous states where power rests with the states and not the central government. This is what the 1946 cabinet mission plan was all about which was accepted by both Congress and Muslim League but vehemently opposed by business houses profiteering under the centralized British rule. Since these business houses were the chief patrons of Congress, it had to withdraw its consent to the plan which in turn led to the partition of India. Way forward is greater autonomy to the states as India is too vast, diverse and populous to be governed centrally.
