A party of street fighters cannot be led by a Papa and Baby penguin. You need a ruthless street fighter and not a genteel wild life photographer to lead a party of street toughs who deliver instant justice on the streets and not waste time in courts.

Thackeray created Shiv Sena not to fight communists and unions but to fight against Gujaratis who dominate the economy of Mumbai and South Indians who in the 60s and 70s dominated services. Bal Thackeray took "protection money" from Gujaratis to let them do business in Mumbai and thereby save their businesses from unions and thugs. This also led to his getting closer to Indira Gandhi and Congress. Bal Thackeray was one of the very few leaders who supported the emergency. Ironically, today same Gujaratis have kicked his family out from the party he created and replaced his son with an illiterate autorickshaw driver.

@hj2711 do you know what is "protection money"? It is money you have to pay to the local dada aka gangster if you want to peacefully do business in the area the dada considers his own. These dadas are in turn protected by politicians and police who in turn get their share of the loot. In return the dadas ensure no one harms those businessmen who pay their "hafta". This is how Shiv Sena from starting out as anti Gujarati ended up as their protectors. Even Modi pointed this out not too long back.

@ravishingravi true. Big cities in India should have residence and travel permits. Unfortunately, Delhi NCR, Bangalore aka air-conditioned city and many other cities are going the Mumbai way. Pollution in Delhi NCR is extremely high as it is landlocked. The big coastal cities have one advantage of pollution being swept to the sea. Without AC one cannot live for 6 to 8 months in Delhi NCR as temperatures exceed 40 degrees Celsius.

@krishnam1 Shiv Sena was created to protect Marathi interests in Maharashtra particularly Mumbai from outsiders like Gujaratis, South Indians and later on the migrants from Hindi states. All these people are predominantly Hindus. It is a purely Marathi nationalist party which later on lent its support to Hindu nationalism. This started the dalliance with BJP.

@ravishingravi not only textiles majority of the corporate headquarters are moving out from Mumbai to Delhi NCR as it is closer to the power center in Delhi. News media have shifted their HQO to Noida and Bollywood may follow suit.

@ravishingravi not only expensive and unaffordable it is an urban nightmare. No wonder it has the world's largest slum right outside the airport. Mumbai is not meant for the middle class.

@rmzr4824 why Mumbai is rich but Marathis are poor? The type of extreme poverty you see in the slums of Mumbai is not visible even in the poorest villages of UP Bihar.

@ravishingravi I have lived in Mumbai for few years and I have never seen a wealthy Marathi. Entire wealth of Maharashtra particularly in Mumbai is in the hands of non Marathi. Not only this, the outsiders don't treat Marathis well in their own state's capital. This led to the birth of Shiv Sena and their saying Mumbai is in Maharashtra but Maharashtra is not in Mumbai. The corporate offices particularly in mid and senior management are almost full of non Marathis. Even here you hardly find any Marathis. What I am saying was brought out extremely well in the mega hit Marathi movie "Mee Shivaji Raje Bhonsle Boltoy".

@rmzr4824 this shows how little you know about Mumbai. The chawls are filled with people from which community? Yes Mumbai has a mixed population. Many south Indians, north Indians particularly from UP Bihar, Muslims etc live in slums. But they also have a large Marathi population who are the main supporters of Shiv Sena. Those are Adivasis who live near Mumbai in extremely primitive condition. I think you might not have visited those parts.

@rmzr4824 whoever lives in Mumbai no matter how rich or poor power Mumbai's economy. The Parsis are also wealthy. The Catholics although not filthy rich are quite well to do.

@svk0071 I have worked in fortune 500 PSU and MNCs headquartered in Mumbai. Give me names of 10 Marathi CEOs of fortune 500 companies headquartered in Mumbai? If what you say is true then there would be no Shiv Sena and movies like Mee Shivaji Raje Bhosle Boltoy and City of Gold which touches upon the lives of Marathi mill workers. In the clerical and workers level you do see Marathis. But as soon as you go up in the hierarchy number of Marathis dwindle. The same is visible even in the streets where all businesses are in the hands of non Marathis and no one not even those born and brought up in Mumbai speak Marathi. What I am saying sounds offensive and hurtful but unfortunately this has been my experience living in Mumbai and Pune for few years. I didn't support Shiv Sena. But after living in Maharashtra I sympathize with their cause. This phenomena is not limited to only Maharashtra.
