Linux has been my primary operating system since 2006. I still end up Googling the syntax and command-line flags for the tar command once a week. But in the last year I did finally learn how to exit vim!

Buddy, this isn't the "spend time in prison" route, this is the "run your criminal empire from prison" route.

@ExpensivePizza Hot take: FORTRAN was such an influential language that anyone venturing out of the C family "learns" it in one form or another. Honestly, as a (primarily) python developer--especially one who has embraced type hunting with open arms--FORTRAN code is 10x more intuitively readable than C++ or Java.

@Thorhian We're saying the same thing. I'm talking about teaching it to people who aren't likely to go into tech as a career. If all you ever need is a scripting language or a flexible interface for basic computation and plotting, python will easily meet those needs in a way that's more user-friendly than bash and more powerful than Excel.

C++ is a great language for a first course in programming because you can either branch and go the C route simply by restricting your syntax, or you can transfer most of the OOP you learn to C# or Java. That said, I think python is a better beginner programming language, because not only is the learning curve the gentlest of slopes (and, excitingly, one without a summit), honestly, once you learn it there's a good chance you'll never have to learn anything else.

I'm a data scientist, and I've just taken a screenshot of 6:11 so I can trot it out thirty times a week
