VSCode is the EMACS of the modern world—properly configured, it can do anything. And it has a loyal church of devotees who contribute to building a really extensive ecosystem. But it's also comparatively heavy, and if you're setting it up for the first time, or—God forbid—using someone else's setup you're in for some unpleasantness.

5:09 "It's so much easier to exit nano" only holds true if you're using a keyboard with a Ctrl button (lots of On-screen touch keyboards don't). Of course Apple removing the ESC key from its Pro MacBooks in 2016 was an aggressively anti-vi move...

I had a ton of problems like this during my monthlong stint using VSCode. I eventually found a plugin oe setting that let you customize the terminal hotkeys so they wouldn't interfere with my usual terminal keyboard shortcuts, but that was not a fun part of the learning curve.

Sublime lost me at not having ARM support when I needed it (can't remember whether that was when making a development environment on a Pi or when I was switching to an M1 Mac for work). The fact that it's not FOSS is also a pain for certain setups. Anyway, on macOS I've switched to TextMate, and I use gedit (via flatpak) across all Linux. Windows installs get notepad++ but that should go without saying.

I'm a gedit Stan, and since gedit is available as a flatpak I simply refuse to use anything else for notepadding. That said, if I'd had a better experience with KDE in 2006, I'd probably be just as passionate about Kate.
