  3.  @andyballard1883  how upset are you that the fossil fuel industry gets £12 billion in subsidies while making over £150 billion in profits last year? The point of subsidies is to encourage socially useful economic activity. Right now the US and EU are investing hundreds of billions into clean energy tech and EVs. That's a good thing. We need these industries to succeed as soon as possible. Neoliberal capitalism is a terrible system but it's the system we live under for the time being. That means that if the government is going to invest in future industry, that money has to go into private corporations. Otherwise expect there to never be a U.K. car industry ever again. We are already way behind our competitors. China, the US, Germany and Korea are already miles ahead of the U.K. on EVs and batteries. If we are to stand any chance of competing, we have to do exactly what they have all done already and that's invest public money in kickstarting the industry.
