  1. Fun fact: people decry the way US prisoners have been treated in North Korea. Guess what? It isn't any better in Japanese prisons. Look at a guard? Beaten to a pulp with probable permanent damage to your body. Not walk perfectly in the prescribed style required by prisoners? Beaten to a bloody pulp with probable permanent damage to your body. Delay obeying an order? (God forbid that you don't understand Japanese perfectly.) Again, beaten to a bloody pulp with probable permanent damage to your body. And they may throw in several weeks of solitary confinement, which means not just solitude, but sitting on the floor, facing the door with your head down, all day long for those weeks. And if they think you need additional correction, they'll bind you into a steel contraption so that you can't move your hands. For weeks. And the chances are pretty good that the guards will beat you while you're in it. You don't hear a lot about that, do you? There's a reason why you can forget your wallet on a bench in Tokyo, and when you come back to look for it hours later, it's either still there or it's been turned in to the authorities.
