@tamarchristians1201 Back in the 1700s, people were taking on adult responsibilities at 16, 17, 18 years old. Adolescence as a stage of life didn't exist. There was no social safety net; a lost reputation could ruin your business and a bad harvest or a hard winter could mean that you starved. If a man went to university, it was a serious education. Also, wars on American soil forced people to grow up fast. To say that life was more complicated then is an arrogant statement. Life was far more complex than it is for most Americans now. Grown men didn't have the option of living with their parents until whenever, doing nothing, nor was it tolerated even for the rich. Girls were expected to get married early, run a household, care for the sick and injured with a certain medical expertise, raise a family, conduct business for the household, ad infinitum, and not burn the house down or let the children get burned while keeping an open fire going 24/7 (a common cause of childhood death back then, btw). Less complicated then? Not even remotely.
