It depends on your financial situation. If you have $300k in the bank, then you can probably do what you want with that card. If you have $3 in the bank, then sell the damn card. And consider all of the things that could happen to that card to destroy the value; unless you live in a perfectly controlled environment, like the special collections room at my university library, just the humidity alone could ruin the card. Spots of fungus, for example. Or a visitor steals it. Any number of things can happen. Therefore, if you don't have big wads of cash already ( in which case, why are you here?), then it's the responsible thing to do to sell the card.

Nope. Factor in the time it takes to get ready, to drive there, and at least half an hour to wait for your food in a restaurant, per meal, as opposed to spending an hour per week shopping for the entire week's groceries and 20 minutes to 30 minutes making a hot meal. Five minutes to make a sandwich for lunch. Two minutes to make coffee for breakfast. You save an enormous amount of time by cooking at home, at least an hour/day, especially if you have a dishwasher, if you count all three meals. I've been a homemaker for 45 years, so let's not pretend, huh?

When wages rise, landlords charge more, retail prices go up, real estate prices go up, and employers start firing employees. It happens every freaking time.

So you know absolutely nothing about how economics works. There was a company that decided to pay everyone $70,000/year, but they went bankrupt. Also, when workers' wages are increased across the board, landlords, retail stores, and everyone else raises their prices all across the board, so you accomplish nothing but getting people fired and raising inflation. It happens every freaking time.

You remind me of the guy who said that if he knew he was going to live so long, he would have taken better care of his teeth.

Ah, the first-worlder complains. Geez. Live in a box in Somalia for awhile. Get an attitude adjustment.

That doesn't work in the US because restaurant food costs as much as 15 times the costs of the ingredients, and the cost of the electricity to cook it is extremely small.

If you have $300,000 in the bank, then you can probably do what you want. If you have $3 in the bank, sell the damn card. If you keep it, are you going to end up sponging off someone else because you can't afford to pay your rent this month, or are you financially well off so that $3,000 isn't that big of a deal to your bank account? It's a matter of proportion.

In California. In middle America, you can still buy an entire house for that. I've been looking.

People didn't use to eat out every day.

You'll be sorry when you're 65 and have no savings. Very sorry indeed.

My local bank sold out to Wells Fargo. WF bought up most of the small banks within 50 miles of me.

Oh, no, it's hot in the summer! The sky is falling! 🤦♀️

Not when you add it up. Restaurants charge up to 15 times the cost of the ingredients. My family spends about $600/month for groceries and we almost never eat out. Why don't we eat out? Multiply $600 by 15.
