  1. The co-pilot is not just there to help the captain; they need to be a fully qualified (for that specific type of aircraft and right area (civilian vs. military)) pilot. They aren't really there to learn (as they should already have mastered the basics of the type), but rather just get experience (and of course not every pilot being able to be a captain). Co-pilots are actually often the ones doing the actual flying too, though of course it is a joint job.
