  1. I had a guy looking suspicious, checking out parked cars. He gave me all kinds of identification, like too much, showing he was a fed and saying that we had to leave him alone. I asked for a business card with a phone number I could call. All federal agents carry cards. He didn’t have that so I called my supervisor. He tried to leave insisting that I didn’t have authority to detain him. I did anyway. My supervisor had the desk sergeant make a bunch of phone calls but nobody ever heard of our suspect. He warned us that we would be in trouble if we arrested him but he got convicted of impersonating a federal agent.

  3. Thank goodness for shields, pepper spray and Tasers. Back in the 1970s we had a stick and a gun. Escalation was fast, straightforward and tragic.
