Comments by "HesteBremse" (@HesteBremse) on "Honda's Asimo: the penalty-taking, bar-tending robot" video.
You if you did not know DARPA released a worldwide competition about a year ago or little more. The goal is to make a humanoid Robot within 2 years time. Among the criteria for then end Robot are; Ability to drive a vehicle, Ability to move over obstacles and debris, Ability to handle various handles, like heavy industrial Switches etc. All this came accordingly to DARPA because of the recent Nuclear catastrophe in Japan. At that time Honda was asked if Asimo could be used to send into the leaking radioactive plant to close important pipelines. But Asimo was not prepared for that task. A lot of people working on this right now but we should not forget who DARPA is; the American Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency. When e.g Google start to buy Robot developers and producers, it might be a very strong indication that something is gonna come with Robots in the not very far future. If this is good or bad news I do not know - Just that it could be both. There is already many concerns about the use of war drones now, the same kind of usage could be done with an advanced humanoid robot. Guess there is always more than one side to the most things. Google have furthermore stated that the expect Robots to be the next big business revolution, whatever that means in reality. While the bee population are radically diminishing due to GMO Pesticides, British Scientist have created robotic pollinators, like small terminator insects - Somehow I must admit that I find it slightly alarming and to some degree scary. While there is no doubt that Robots can be applied with a lot of tasks and already is, replacing Bee´s with robots instead of removing the reason why the bee´s disappear just seams plainly wrong to me.
