Japan annually ranks in the top 5 in international testing among high school students in math, science and literacy. Check PISA for results.

Now factor in rent or the cost of a home. We bought a home on a 1/4 lot, 50 minutes from the centre of Tokyo for $150,000 in 2020. The same home would have cost us 10 times that for the land alone in my native, Toronto, Canada. So, while the salaries have been stagnant for 30 years, we don't have the enormous expenditures those in the West have that eat those salaries

@ johnsonwu I’m a licensed high school teacher. I obtained my teaching license from Rikkyo University. A hand written 2000 word essay in Japanese on 2nd language acquisition and its corresponding pedagogy was a prerequisite to satisfy the language requirement. If you’d like to take online lessons in either Japanese or English, I could help you overcome your rudimentary errors in either or both. Cheers ✨

I knew there'd be a foreigner in Japan who got triggered by the bad manner comments

@johnsonwu126 No, high school. Japan annually ranks in the top 5 in international teasing among high school students in math, science and literacy. Check PISA’s results to see where your country ranks.

@johnsonwu126 "Do you still live there? I am.” To produce a grammatical mess like this while mocking the Japanese about their English is ironic. Thanks for the chuckle, John.

@johnsonwu126 I recommend taking my class to improve your English. Here’s your first lesson. It’s on the house. “Do you still live there? I do.” You’re welcome.

@johnsonwu126 My accomplishments only seem impressive when compared with those of other foreigners in Japan, 90% of whom are functionally illiterate.

Japan ranks 27th in the world for hours worked per annum. Not everyone works in the corporate towers of Shinjuku or in agriculture. The majority of Japanese work standard 40 hours a week Monday-Friday 9-5, which is why JR cites their peak hours as being from 8-9am and 5-6pm, corroborating OECD's data on hours worked per annum.

@digits001 It’s estimated that 70% of Tokyo’s workforce commutes to work by train. Japan Rail, the largest passenger rail operator, cites the evening rush as being busiest between the hour of 5~6 pm, indicating that that is when the majority of Japanese are returning home from work. JR’s data is of actual people going through ticket gates. So while you may be correct about productivity, you're off about the Japanese working long hours, in general. The fact is they work fewer hours than all of North America and that is where most of the misconceptions about Japanese work culture arise. They work fewer hours...and as you've pointed out, less while working.

We've raised 5 kids with my wife staying home. I make 60k per annum. That's 60k for a family of 7. My kids don't want for the latest fashions, smartphones, ski trips or piano lessons. We all eat well. One reason it's affordable to raise a family in Japan is affordable housing, that and affordable healthcare. I pay the equivalent of $300 a month for a family of 7 and that includes hospital stays, medicine and dental. Stagnation has not been all bad.
