  1. I bought a 3 bedroom home on a 1/4 acre lot, 50 minutes from Ikebukuro (the centre of Tokyo) for the equivalent of $150,000 USD. The land alone would have cost me at least 10 times that in my native, Toronto, Canada.

  2. There are plenty of cheap accommodation options. I usually stay at a business hotel in Ueno for ￥6000 per night. There is an extensive B&B network. I live in Chichibu. My friends who visit stay at a B&B in the centre of town for ￥3000 per night. It backs on to a shrine has a big eat in kitchen two 8 tatami mat rooms. Shower, separate toilet and is hospital clean. I've travelled throughout Japan using B&Bs. Also, plenty of ryokans offer discount plans. It takes a little internet searching, but there are plenty of dirt cheap accommodations available.
