I have 5 kids all born and raised in Japan. My wife is Japanese. I'm Canadian. None of my kids had experienced any kind of racism until I took my son to Canada. I enrolled him in an ice hockey school there. After one practice he asked me "Papa...what's a nip?" He was 8 at the time. You want to know what people call him in Japan? Kenji

Ā @Laura-kl7viĀ ābeing labelledā implies being āotheredā which implies racism when referring to bi-racial Japanese. Being called ć-ćis the same thing as being called tall. Itās not an epithet, itās a description. If you heard someone say I was labelled as ātallā in Japan youād say āwhat?ā What do you mean ālabelledā?

Ā @Valentino016Ā I'm fluent and literate in Japanese. I've lived in Japan since 1988. I'm proudly Canadian

Ā @Livia7756Ā There are two criteria for being Japanese. One is ethnicity, the other is legally. He had the choice to become a Japanese citizen legally. He chose to be British.

Ā @adamhyde5378Ā You might want to choose Canadian citizenship as conscription is a looming possibility with the geo-political tensions in the region.

Ā @conrodlindsay5463Ā That's awesome! What's the name of his restaurant?

Ā @skitteekatzĀ He chooses to be a foreigner by retaining his British passport and not naturalising which he could easily do.

There is a legal definition of Japanese. You can naturalise and become a Japanese regardless of where you were born. Or you could have been born in Japan and had your name documented in the family registrar (the legal criterion for being a Japanese citizen). Either one of these would make you Japanese. The gentleman above has a choice whether or not to be Japanese.
