Comments by "Gordon Graham" (@gordonbgraham) on "What's it like being Homeless in Japan?" video.
@UnconsciousAvocado What’s a viable alternative to capitalism? Has capitalism ruined more lives than it has lifted out of abject poverty? Capitalism has also produced a large tax base with which to implement social safety nets like welfare and healthcare and with which to gird society with education and infrastructure. Japan has an estimated 3,500 homeless among a population of 125 million. Those 3,500 have recourse to welfare and affordable housing. Perhaps the inaccurate assumption is that capitalism will provide everything for you so you never have to work a day in your life and milk and honey will flow from every river and stream? What is it exactly that has "ruined the lives of people"? Connect the dots...Saying "this is how" without saying how is meaningless

For the 3,300 homeless. Meanwhile, in Canada which has 1/3 of the population there are 250,000 homeless.

@SkaterStimm actually, people in Japan do have recourse to government subsidized housing and welfare. Some refuse help for whatever reason...pride perhaps

@Macky1101 Very few homeless among the 126.5 million citizens of Japan. Those who are have recourse to government subsidised housing and welfare. There are most certainly social safety nets in Japan in place for the less fortunate. However, some choose for whatever reason to eschew them and go it on their own. As you can see from the video above the homeless in Japan look far less destitute than those in the USA. Absent is the rampant drug use, squalor and crime. Most homeless work and there are public bathhouses by which they maintain their hygiene and dignity.

Venezuela is a socialist nation, it has 1.1 million homeless among a population of 28 million. Japan has 3,300 homeless in a nation of 125 million. One political system is better than the other...two guess which one is worse.

@UnconsciousAvocado You said I’d made an inaccurate assumption. What essay? All I can see is “this is how capitalism has ruined people’s lives”. That’s just a meaningless statement, not an essay.
1
@UnconsciousAvocado This grammar implies that I'm the reader, not the writer: "before deep diving into essays like this its important to read and re-read and make sure you understand what the other person has said."
1
@UnconsciousAvocado There's an implication that alternative systems of governance are better than capitalism. That leaves two choices...communism or socialism.

@UnconsciousAvocado I read what you wrote: "before deep diving into essays like this its important to read and re-read and make sure you understand what the other person has said." This statement suggests that I should "take a deep dive", meaning to analyse extensively, "into essays like this", meaning my "essay". Ergo, I'm the reader in this statement as you have suggested that I examine and analyse the essay. English is tricky sometimes, I know.

@UnconsciousAvocado Why did I jump to the conclusion that the OP thinks socialism is better? By the writer's implication that there is a better system of governance than capitalism. That leaves two options, communisim or socialism. Perhaps he/she thinks communism is better. We don't know for sure, because comments like these are kind of like Tourette's syndrom blurts. That is, people tend to blurt out things as a knee-jerk response without much thought and with no explanation as to how capitalism "ruins the lives of people". Perhaps instead of taking me to task for challenging him/her on his/her statement, you could ask the OP in what way capitalism has "ruined people's lives" or ask him/her what system of governance is superior to capitalism. I'd like to know, too. I suspect we won't get a response, so I'll continue to assume he/she either meant communisim or socialism as those are the only two other options besides fuedalism known to man.

@UnconsciousAvocado Perhaps you need a course in English writing. It can be tricky.

@UnconsciousAvocado What I’m saying is your convoluted, run on sentence doesn’t say what you’ve intended it to say. Therefore, the confusion arose due to your error in grammar. Try short sentences. They’re clearer and easier to write. Cheers✨

@UnconsciousAvocado "Capitalism ruins people's lives". I understand that. What I don't understand is how, because the writer didn't say.

@UnconsciousAvocado Could you? Give it a shot.

@UnconsciousAvocado "you assumed that the original commenter was coming from a perspective in which they deem socialist countries better than capitalism." I think you meant socialist countries deemed better than capitalist countries...not capitalism. You tend to run into difficulties with convoluted, run-on sentences. I suggest you take your own suggestion and try writing shorter, more simple sentences, ones you can handle. By the way, your previous error was both convoluted and incorrect. Cheers
