@jinz0 I've lived in Japan since 1988, for more than 30 years. This "robot" style you claim Japanese to have is foreign to me. Do you mean disciplined in the work and school environments? I've taught at a high school of 1500 students for more than 30 years and have found kids to be quite individualistic with all kinds of unique characteristics between them, some quiet and shy others obnoxious and outspoken and a myriad of others in between. I've also run an elite youth ice hockey program that currently has 70 members...all quite unique individuals. That there is a standard of decorum that is expected of them in certain social situations doesn't mean they are "robots". I'm a Western raised white person. I come from a different culture, but also adhere to the customs and social mores of my host nation and culture. That doesn't make me a "robot", that makes me and individual who can recognise the value of things like teamwork, patience, deference to those with more experience etc. We are not the same? Who is we? I'm not you, you're not me. We are all individuals. Yes, there are differences in societies as a whole, but within each unique society there are unique individuals. That people adhere to social mores in Japan doesn't make them any less of an individual.

@jinz0 What is 100% robot style Japanese? And what is a "normal white guy"?

@FredMaverik Japanese people are not 2 dimensional characters void of individuality.

It's akin to learning the piano through sheet music only. If you never actually sit down to play at the piano, you won't be able to "play". In Japan, most people never need English in their work life, school life or home life. There are so few foreigners to communicate with and outside of the tourism industry there is no opportunity to use the language...or "play" the piano as it were. Yes, there is the Internet, but young people are so ensconced in their own tasked filled lives that what free time they have is naturally not dedicated to more study. Europe, on the other hand is a mash of 44 countries who rely on English to communicate with each other. Europeans also have the benefit of having the same alphabet. You've been to Japan more than 10 times. How well can you read and write Japanese?

@TravelerPat Here's an interesting video with random Japanese people being interviewed on the street. Do their answers seem "robotic"? I heard a lot of different answers to the same question. I see a lot of individuals with unique personalities. https://youtu.be/f8I5gOb9aMc
