@fotonapapa I wonder if study abroad programs don't tilt those numbers. 76% of 留学生 are female. Also, percentages don't provide numbers. Does HIS have the actual number of female travellers? I'm not disputing your point, I'm just curious as I also live in Japan (since 1988) and know of 2 women who have travelled abroad alone (outside of study abroad programs), but several men who have...albeit mostly for business, not travel. Also, there is this "Expedia Japan conducted a comparison survey on travel trend of Millennial generation (born from 1982〜1999) in 21 countries. As a result, the ratio of Japanese Millennials without overseas travel in the past year was 58%, which was the highest among 21 countries." So, Takeshi's impression may stem from the fact that young Japanese don't travel overseas as much as those from other countries. Perhaps, the fact that he's travelled abroad and in his experience fewer of his friends in Japan have, has left that impression. The study was conducted in 2017, pre-pandemic. This survey from JTB contradicts HIS's numbers: "The latest JTB Tourism Research & Consulting’s survey finds that only 14.1% of all 20 years old or older respondents have plans to travel overseas for fun within the next year. The most answers are found in 20s males (28.7%), followed by 20s females (27.6%) and 30s males (22.4%)." This survey was published May 30, 2030.
