Old original one gets water in it, and as the safety start is on the bottom, that fails before the display starts to give false readings. Bottom is the safety switch, and the reverse light, top is the trans position switch. Most common would be start failure, but another clue is the reverse lamps either glowing dimly, or being burnt out from being on all the time.

Those switches are a common failure, the recess at the top allows water in, corroding the safety switch, which is on the bottom of the switch. You note the new switch is a different design, including both no more recess, and a seal that is improved to keep the switch dry inside. If you look at the wiring diagram there is actually a option for the switch, used in the manual version, where the vehicle will not start unless the clutch pedal is fully pressed. That switch too is known to give problems, but being protected is less likely to suffer from water ingress and the corrosion from that, more than not simply falling apart as the plastic goes brittle.
