  8. What really drives the asymmetry (in my opinion) is that Russia has a tradition of killing leaders who lose foreign wars. The fear is that a defeated Putin may decide that death by nuclear holocaust is preferable to death by lynching, and the main defense against this possibility is that Putin almost certainly can't personally launch nuclear missiles.

  12. Doesn't always work that way -- for example in Russian an unstressed "o" is pronounced "a" -- but Ukrainian is pretty phonetic. Just remember that "i" is pronounced like the "ea" in English "meat" while "y" is pronounced like the "i" in English "bit".

  18.  @Warren_Peace  Which is why I view European politicians opposed to nuclear power as traitors. The worst of all was former German Chancellor Gerhard Schröder, who actually got a plum job at Russian pipeline company Nordstream right after leaving office.
