If China did invade the Russian Far East, I wonder if the West would greenlight Japan to reclaim Karafuto and Chishima (aka Sakhalin Oblast)?

A few English words have the Zh sound: the S in "measure" for example.

They've still got to cross the whole width of Ukraine to get to the front line: Ukraine is a big country!

Although one place name Jake always seems to get wrong is the Russian city of Voronezh, which he pronounces "Vorenz".

I think Jake is referring to now, not during what we must now call "Cold War I".

Shades of Germany's offensive of Spring 1918, which they saw as their last chance to win the war before the Yanks would arrive and swamp them.

Trump doesn't seem to be a territorial expansionist though, just a hater of non-white immigrants. I wonder if MAGA supporters are an example of James Kunstler's 2005 quip when he said that "Americans will vote for cornpone Nazis before they will give up their entitlements to a McHouse and a McCar".

What really drives the asymmetry (in my opinion) is that Russia has a tradition of killing leaders who lose foreign wars. The fear is that a defeated Putin may decide that death by nuclear holocaust is preferable to death by lynching, and the main defense against this possibility is that Putin almost certainly can't personally launch nuclear missiles.

Iraq and the Taliban didn't have nuclear ICBMs.

Even scarier given that Nazi Germany never had nuclear ICBMs.

Doesn't always work that way -- for example in Russian an unstressed "o" is pronounced "a" -- but Ukrainian is pretty phonetic. Just remember that "i" is pronounced like the "ea" in English "meat" while "y" is pronounced like the "i" in English "bit".

I suspect a lot of the support for Russia in the global South is based on a bastardization of Karl Marx's famous call to arms: "Natural resource exporters of the world, unite!"

Given the strength of Russian air defenses, perhaps Ukraine needs not F-16s but F-35s?

It's harder for countries to get over losing a territorially-contiguous empire than to get over losing overseas colonies. Note the Hungarian irredentist sentiment that Orbán has been able to exploit!

@steve470 Why aren't any other Republicans willing to run against her in the primary?
1
@steve470 Why exactly do you think MTG is so popular? It certainly doesn't sound like a top-down phenomenon driven by Kremlin money or kompromat!

@Warren_Peace Which is why I view European politicians opposed to nuclear power as traitors. The worst of all was former German Chancellor Gerhard Schröder, who actually got a plum job at Russian pipeline company Nordstream right after leaving office.
