If you wanted to wipe out semiconductors across a huge area (and especially satellites) wouldn't the way to do it be to set off a hydrogen bomb just above the Earth's atmosphere?

It was the Aral Sea that the Soviets turned into a wasteland (by diverting the incoming river water to irrigate cotton crops), not the Caspian Sea.

@EEX97623 1993 was also arguably the year in which the hope of Russia becoming a democracy died, as it was when Boris Yeltsin ordered the shelling of the Russian Parliament.

Wouldn't the USSR (and even the Western world) have still been using mostly vacuum-tube electronics when Tsar Bomba was detonated?

@Brian-om2hh Elections in modern Russia (unlike the USSR or Nazi Germany) don't literally only have one candidate: rather they have a few "controlled opposition" parties that just passively go along with the Kremlin's wishes.

@lepidoptera9337 I suppose artillery shell production may be a possibility for reviving the economy of the Donbas, as it wasn't just the region which has suffered the most in this war, but was also a "rust belt" region with a tradition of heavy industry, whose economic grievances arguably helped cause the war by convincing some of its less-educated residents to turn traitor in 2014.

Many of our staunchest Brexiteers have an obsession with World War II similar to that of the Russians: I wonder if the Kremlin backed Brexit because they believed (wrongly as it turned out) that these people would fall for Russian propaganda about "Nazi Ukraine"?

@SpringIsBACK Wasn't it not so much the Pax Americana as the Pax Atomica, with nuclear MAD preventing major powers fighting one another?

If Ukraine expels the invaders but Russia doesn't totally fall apart as a result, then I imagine the Ukrainians would be massively in demand with the NATO military leaderships, for all the lessons they can give on how to fight Russians.

@timsullivan4566 Although Anatoly Karpov (who used to be Kasparov's arch-rival in chess) is now sitting in Putin's puppet parliament.
