  5. Ukrainian air defenses are pretty effective against conventional Russian ballistic missiles, so would thus be similarly effective against nuclear missiles with similar flight profiles. The real danger is that Russia would lash out directly at NATO, as that would involve ICBMs which we still don't have the ability to intercept (because they're several times faster than short-range ballistic missiles).

  6.  @skipperclinton1087  And there's a reason why the US started doing this in 1945: think of what happened on August 6 that year. (Or more to the point, think of what the Soviets did in 1949, as that's really what was significant.)

  8. I wouldn't describe the problem as "politicians trying to be generals" per se: the issue in both cases is that the war was fought in the back yard of a hostile nuclear power (China in Vietnam's case) which the US was afraid to anger too much for fear of nuclear war.
